Hi Andy, First things first, is it a MK4 or 2005? it cant be both :) MK4 is 2007 onwards, I suspect you mean a MK3. Either way, I would say check the gearbox oil and consider replacing it if its in dire health! if its only first gear and no others, does it behave better when its warmed up? if so, this would indicate the oil could do with a change, however, if its no any better it might be the

Engine oil starts off light brown but quickly becomes black (especially in diesels), Whichever is leaking it will be a gearbox out job. Then either gearbox repair or new crank seal.

The Amsoil MTG 75w-90 (Manual Transmission/Transaxle Gear oil) says GLS-4 on the label, the 80w-90 Gearbox Oil is a GL-5 and not recommended.
